Read full description of the books:
Sydney-based musician Carolyn Shine moves to Hanoi virtually on a whim, expecting to find romance and available culture. She's in for some big surprises. Funny, warm and engaging, her travel memoir introduces us to a cast of memorable Vietnamese characters as well as her fellow foreigners searching for love and adventure. From teaching English, sub-editing a propaganda news sheet, to forming a blues band, against the backdrop of a world seemingly alive with the promise of romance, this is a beguiling evocation of Hanoi and its people: pungent, earthy and sensual.

Read information about the authorCarolyn Shine grew up in North London and Bondi. She studied Fine Arts and Linguistics at the University of New South Wales and went on to become a musician, songwriter and music educator.
As a musician, she has played with dozens of bands, backed many celebrity singers and made several albums. Her original songs have been recorded and are performed by a number of Australian vocalists. As a freelance writer she has been published in various publications, including the Sydney Morning Herald.
Her interests/obsessions include all areas of natural science, especially neuroscience and biology, pedagogy, language acquisition, skepticism and critical thinking, growing tropical plants - especially succulents, travelling, and taking mediocre photos.
She teaches piano at the Cambodian Children’s Trust (CCT) orphanage, in Battambang, Cambodia whenever she can get over there, and her efforts have already produced one protégé, a boy who intends to become a musician. She also helps maintain the orphanage website and proofreads all its written material.
She also co-wrote the commissioned autobiography of CCT’s founder, Tara Winkler, for Allen & Unwin.
She moved to Hanoi on a whim in 2002, expecting available culture and romance. Her disappointment propelled her to seek satisfying answers to questions on culture that until then she’d never dared ask
